Like any region in France, the high-altitude ski resorts have developed their own Christmas traditions over the years. These winter activities will delight young and old. They all have one thing in common: bringing guests together to share unforgettable moments.
Christmas decorations
Christmas tree decoration is an established tradition in many French regions. In the mountains, this home decoration leads to a walk in the mountain pastures and the snowy forests. Children gather holly branches and pine cones that the adults then arrange to decorate the Christmas table and the fireplace.
Out of respect for the surrounding forests, fir trees are bought from a garden centre or a specialised shop.
Bonfires in the Hautes-Alpes
On Christmas Eve, the villages of the Hautes-Alpes had a custom of lighting large bonfires, which young people then enjoyed jumping over. This is a dying tradition in the Alpine resorts, but you can reproduce the warmth of the flames at home by lighting candles on the Christmas table or around the fireplace.
But remember, it is essential to extinguish them before Santa comes.
Santa's visit by horse-drawn carriage
The legendary Santa Claus graces many resorts with his arrival in a horse-drawn carriage. Pulled by reindeer, he travels the old streets of ski resorts and Alpine villages, offering gifts (sweets, chocolates) to children passing by.
The Christmas ice rink
Every winter, elegant couples and whole families gather on the ice rink set up for the occasion. You can rent ice skates on-site and enjoy the traditional music of Christmas or tunes from Tchaikovsky's ballets.
Some people in the Alpine villages prefer to go skating in the evening or at night when there are fewer tourists and the lights are reflected on the ice. This makes an ideal setting for taking souvenir photos.
All the chalets in the Cimalpes range have cosy areas where you can enjoy a glass of mulled wine and a delicious mountain biscuit.
Typical Christmas dishes from the Alps
On 24 December, families and friends prepare a Yule log that will take centre stage on the festive table. In the Southern Alps, Christmas dinner comes with 13 desserts, including nougats, dried fruit, almonds, figs, grapes and a "pompe à huile", a creamy dessert made with olive oil from Provence and orange blossom.
Closer to Lyon, in the 3 Valleys area, the "pompe à huile" is replaced by Merveilles (fritters) sprinkled with icing sugar.
Storytelling by the fire
When the snow falls on the resort, and the travellers return to their winter chalet, the atmosphere becomes conducive to gathering in small groups. From time immemorial, gatherings by the fire have been an opportunity to tell stories of yesteryear, share memories and invent stories.
The magic of Christmas is above all about being together. So let's never lose the memory of these precious moments.
